Sand man passes

My friend Victor DeGraff, the sand painter, died suddenly on Tuesday, driving home from Art Lovers Trading Company, after dropping off a drawing by a fellow artist for an upcoming show. His car crashed into a ditch on Cobden Road. Victor was 87 years old, with a heart condition

His heart condition was he loved life -- especially art, music and good movies. . . and dining with friends.

Victor was a very active man. Not just "for his age" but for any age. As an artist, he was prolific, always working on a new sand painting or design idea. Like the man, his art is ageless.

Yesterday, I spent a few hours scanning & uploading his bird paintings. Today, I'll do the cave paintings; then the landscapes, seascapes, and abstract designs over the weekend.

Prints of most his paintings will be available through Art Lovers.

I'll miss Vic. He was a special friend.

I am very saddened to hear this about Victor. I only got to know him for a very short time while working on his documentary video, but I quickly realized how amazing he was, not only with his sand painting talents and knowledge, but also by his soft spoken, friendly demeanor, and true love of art.

Rest in peace, Victor.

Victor was my uncle. As a kid I was always excited when my "artist uncle" was coming for a visit. He encouraged my interest in going to art school, and gave me good advice on my own drawings. He was a really cool guy and someone to look up to.

It's hard to let go of Victor. I still have his voice on my answering machine. He was such a dedicated artist and man. After the delivery of a special art piece to my gallery, Victor lost his life. He felt really bad that day, but wanted to make sure I had the art for my show. He was that kind of man!

His memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church this Saturday, February 16th at 10:30am. Victor loved his church and his friends. We will hold on to his memory.
